Turning Setbacks into Opportunities
In 2012, at the age of 26, I faced a significant setback when I was laid off from my first full-time writing job. Having aspired to be a writer for as long as I can remember, the news was devastating. After graduating from college in Washington, DC, in 2007, I had secured a position at a congressional paper. I began my journey by collecting op-eds from senators and congressmen, evolving my role to write about local neighborhoods and significant events.
Finding a New Path
Post-layoff, I reassessed my career aspirations and decided to pursue a master’s degree in education, convinced that writing might remain just a cherished hobby. Little did I know, this decision would carve a new direction for my professional journey.
Embracing Multiple Roles
While earning my degree online from Penn State’s World Campus, I began teaching piano lessons to supplement my income. With 12 years of piano experience, I was eager to share my knowledge. In parallel, I explored freelance writing opportunities, discovering the joy of being my own boss and engaging with clients on projects that excited me.
Diving into Photography
By 2015, after completing my degree, I diversified my income streams further by adding portrait photography to my repertoire. I had always enjoyed capturing moments for family and friends, and I leveraged social platforms and word-of-mouth to grow my client base. Building a website further solidified my brand, significantly boosting my autumn and spring bookings.
Balancing Three Careers
Fast forward ten years, and I’ve successfully maintained a balance between teaching piano, writing, and photography. Each role provides unique challenges and rewards, contributing to a diversified income. I’ve learned to navigate the ups and downs of freelance work, especially during summer months when my piano students tend to travel.
The Realities of Freelancing
Freelancing does present its fair share of stress, yet it offers me flexibility and autonomy that a traditional office job wouldn’t. In 2022, I moved back to my hometown of Pittsburgh, which has made freelancing even more manageable due to a lower cost of living. Although rebuilding my client base in both piano and photography has been challenging, my writing career continues to thrive.
Financial Viability and Support
My monthly income fluctuates between $2,000 to $4,000, reflecting the nature of freelance work. Despite sacrificing some weekends to focus on work, the rewards have been worth it, especially with my husband’s unwavering support. With a decade of experience behind me, I’ve confirmed that this freelance lifestyle suits both my personal and professional ambitions.
Embracing Change: My Journey in Freelancing and Passion Projects
Life can be unpredictable, especially in your twenties. My path took a significant turn when I found myself unexpectedly out of work. With a dream to write, I began exploring various avenues beyond the corporate world. Transitioning from a structured job to a freelance lifestyle opened doors I never knew existed.
From Full-Time Employment to Freelancing
When I transitioned to freelancing, I was determined to capitalize on my skills. Instead of succumbing to despair, I channeled my energy into my passion for writing. Freelancing allowed me to choose projects that resonated with me, aligning my work with my interests.
Expanding My Skillset: Teaching Music
In addition to writing, I began teaching piano lessons, leveraging my years of music training. This not only supplemented my income but also rekindled my love for music. I found joy in guiding my students through their musical journeys, creating bonds that lasted beyond the classroom.
Building a Photography Portfolio
My passion for photography blossomed during this time as well. I utilized social media and community platforms to promote my services, leading to a steady flow of clients. Capturing moments for families and individuals became a fulfilling addition to my portfolio, enriching my creative expression.
The Reality of Freelancing: Ups and Downs
While freelancing offers flexibility, it can also be unpredictable. With varying workloads throughout the year, I often faced challenges during slow seasons. To maintain financial stability, I sought additional opportunities, including seasonal camp jobs and special project commissions.
Work-Life Balance in Freelancing
Freelancing has gifted me a unique work-life balance. I enjoy the freedom of setting my schedule, allowing me to prioritize personal wellbeing and family time. The absence of a traditional office environment has alleviated stress, enabling greater focus on my creative endeavors.
The Future of My Freelance Career
Years into this journey, I continue to thrive as a freelance writer, music instructor, and photographer. My work has not only evolved but has also formed a supportive community. As I navigate new challenges and opportunities, I remain grateful for the chance to follow my passions and share my talents with others.
