The Holmesburg Civic Association recently hosted a presentation by city officials and architects regarding the Riverview Wellness Village, a recovery housing initiative located at 7801 State Road. This wellness program aims to support individuals recovering from substance abuse.
City officials are expected to return next month for a formal zoning presentation, and support from the Zoning Board of Adjustment is anticipated to be strong, given that the initiative aligns with Mayor Cherelle Parker’s priorities.
Since its inception in January, the wellness village has catered to nearly 90 residents, with a total site capacity of 234. A monthly community advisory council has been established, and a modest community benefits agreement is currently in development.
Plans are underway for the construction of a multi-level building to enlarge the program’s capacity. This expansion will involve the removal of 13 trees; however, 175 new trees will be planted in their place. The site will feature 24/7 staffing, security measures, and amenities such as public art, outdoor spaces, and recreational facilities including a gym and sports courts.
According to Isabel McDevitt, the city’s executive director of community wellness and recovery, the program focuses on individuals who have completed initial treatment. Recovery services will be provided by Merakey and Gaudenzia, alongside healthcare support and workforce development. Residents can stay on-site for up to one year and will have access to a primary care clinic that offers essential health services.
To maintain a drug-free environment, residents will undergo random and frequent drug tests. Questions about the wellness village can be directed to info@riverviewwellness.com.
In other news from the civic meeting, the association voted 9-2 against obstructing the legalization of a food truck at 8030 Frankford Ave, which was already operating during the meeting. Laura Cassidy, from the city’s Department of Prisons, spoke about a composting program next to Holmesburg Prison, noting its success without any odor or rodent issues, while some compost is donated to a local charter school’s garden.
This summer, the Star Players, part of the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation, will present Honk! The Ugly Duckling Musical on May 30-31 and June 1, at the Venice Island Performing Arts Center. Tickets are available for $15 in advance and $20 at the door.
