Marquette Welcomes New In-Person Wellness Center for First Responders
MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – This week marks a significant milestone in mental health support for first responders in Michigan with the grand opening of the Frontline Strong Together (FST5) Wellness Center in the Upper Peninsula. As a pioneering initiative, this center provides around-the-clock confidential peer counseling, expanding services to all 83 counties in the state.
Breaking the Stigma of Mental Health
Mental health issues, often stigmatized in the first responder community, can lead to unaddressed emotional struggles. Jacki Lasich, the trauma specialist at the new Marquette facility, emphasizes the importance of creating a supportive environment. “If we can really not keep a lid on those emotions, and have a safe place to put it out there to have it reframed, to normalize it and validate them, we truly are going to make a difference with all of our first responders,” she stated.
The Foundations of FST5
Established in 2021, FST5 stands for ‘Frontline Strong Together, Five,’ which represents the five branches it serves: police, corrections, fire, EMS, and dispatch, along with their immediate families. This initiative aims to provide mental health resources specifically tailored for those who face unique challenges in emergency services.
Addressing Solitude and Stress in the Field
In the remote and often isolated regions of the Upper Peninsula, many first responders work long hours alone. This isolation can amplify issues such as alcohol use, gambling, and relationship breakdowns. Detective Sergeant Nicholas Carter from the Chocolay Township Police Department highlights the challenge: “With a small department, we only have one guy on each shift. You’re handling calls by yourself, then you’re having to deal with those tough situations alone. This really puts it out there that ‘hey, you aren’t by yourself anymore.’”
Wellness Center Services
The newly opened wellness center is designed to serve as a sanctuary for first responders. It provides a space for individuals to decompress, speak with trained therapists, and participate in weekly anonymous meetings held every Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Most importantly, these services come at no cost to the individuals seeking help.
Location and Accessibility
The Upper Peninsula Wellness Center is conveniently located in Suite 500 of Marquette’s historic City Hall building at 220 W. Washington Street. It welcomes all first responders from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., creating easy access to essential mental health resources.
24/7 Peer Support Hotline
For first responders in need of immediate assistance, the FST5 encourages reaching out to their dedicated peer support hotline at 1-833-347-8766, available 24/7. This service aims to ensure that no one feels alone in their struggles, providing critical connection and support during challenging times.

Introduction to Wellness Support for First Responders
A groundbreaking initiative has arrived in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, introducing the first in-person wellness center dedicated to the mental health of first responders. This center, part of a larger program focused on offering around-the-clock peer counseling, marks a significant step in addressing the mental well-being of those who serve our communities.
Importance of Mental Health Awareness
The stigma surrounding mental health issues within emergency services is prevalent, often leading individuals to suppress their emotions. Addressing these feelings proactively is crucial, as confinement of such emotions can lead to adverse effects. Specialists at the new center emphasize the importance of creating a safe environment for expression and healing.
Creating a Supportive Environment
Trauma specialists highlight the need for spaces where first responders can authentically share their experiences. “By allowing them to bring their emotions to the surface, we can help reframe their perspectives and validate their feelings,” one expert noted. This approach aims to foster resilience and camaraderie among first responders.
The Role of FST5 in Supporting First Responders
Established in 2021, Frontline Strong Together (FST5) fulfills a critical role by providing resources specifically for police, fire, EMS, corrections, and dispatch personnel, as well as their families. The organization’s focus on mental health underscores the collective responsibility to safeguard those who dedicate their lives to public service.
Challenges Facing First Responders in Rural Areas
The Upper Peninsula presents unique challenges, including isolation during long shifts, often leaving first responders to confront difficult situations alone. Their experiences can lead to common challenges such as substance use issues and strained relationships. This new center hopes to bridge that gap, ensuring no one feels isolated in their struggles.
Available Services and Support
The wellness center provides a variety of services, including therapy sessions and weekly anonymous meetings for those seeking community support. These resources offer a vital lifeline at no cost, helping first responders to decompress and connect with peers facing similar challenges.
