Overview of the Golden Harvest Senior Resource & Wellness Faire
The second annual Golden Harvest Senior Resource & Wellness Faire is set to take place on Saturday, October 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sonoma Community Center. This highly anticipated event will feature free flu vaccinations, around 30 information tables, guest speakers, a soup cook-off, and an exciting raffle.
Event Collaboration and Leadership
This community-driven event is co-produced by Sonoma Valley Hospital, Vintage House, Sonoma Community Center, and Cogir Sonoma Plaza. Two prominent figures leading the initiative are Becky Spear, a geriatric nurse practitioner at Sonoma Valley Hospital, and Dawn Castelli, the hospital’s community outreach and marketing manager. Together, they aim to connect older adults with vital resources.
Bridging Connections in Sonoma Valley
“Sonoma Valley is home to an incredible array of generous and vital organizations, but it can be hard to know who’s out there and how to connect,” said Spear. The Golden Harvest Faire serves as a centralized hub where older adults, their families, and caregivers can discover essential services designed to enhance their quality of life.
Addressing the Needs of Older Adults
The organizers are committed to presenting a wide range of resources that cater to the specific needs of older adults, guided by California’s Master Plan for Aging. This includes five key areas: housing for all ages and stages, innovative health solutions, inclusivity and equity, effective caregiving, and affordable aging options.
Highlights from Last Year’s Event
Spear noted that last year’s inaugural event exceeded expectations, attracting over 100 attendees and more than 30 community partners. Participants not only made personal connections but also took home a printed resource guide that will be updated and distributed again this year. The dynamic lineup of speakers and the popular soup cook-off added a fun and competitive element to the event.
Anticipated Growth and Community Involvement
With last year’s event hosting approximately 100 individuals, over 200 attendees are expected this year. “It’s open to everyone,” Spear emphasized. “While resources focus on older adults, caring for them is a multigenerational effort.” Last year, families brought children and grandchildren along, promoting a community-centric atmosphere.
Engaging Activities and Educational Sessions
The event will feature community partners offering informational handouts and treats. Attendees will receive a “passport card” that serves as a raffle ticket. Collecting stamps from each table will make them eligible for prizes, including local restaurant gift cards, a Sonoma County Regional Parks membership, and a winter wellness basket from Adobe Drugs.
Notable Speakers and Educational Focus
Attendees can look forward to engaging talks from specialists such as Mary L. Flett, a retired clinical psychologist, and Lisa Bell, a physical therapist. Flett will provide insights on decision-making for older adults and developing wellness roadmaps. Meanwhile, Bell will address common vestibular disorders, offering valuable information to help prevent falls.
Soup Cook-Off and Community Support
The popular soup cook-off will see the defending champion, Cogir of Sonoma, face off against returning competitor Sonoma Valley Hospital, along with newcomers Vintage House and Sonoma Valley Fire District. Spear expressed gratitude for the support from the City of Sonoma and local businesses, including Trinity Episcopal Church, which has reserved its parking lot for attendees, and volunteers from community organizations set to assist during the event.
