Risks of Hearing Loss due to Gadgets
Modern gadgets like mobile phones, earphones, headphones, high-volume speakers, and televisions have been linked to an increased risk of hearing loss among youth, as highlighted by medical experts during a recent webinar.
Webinar Highlights: Gadgets Impact on Ear Health
During the Hindu-Naruvi Hospital webinar on ‘Gadgets in ENT’, panelists expressed growing concerns about the adverse effects of technology on hearing health. Mary Kurien, Professor and Head of the Department of ENT at Naruvi Hospital in Vellore, emphasized, “Noise-induced hearing loss is a major neglected public health challenge, necessitating advocacy for behavioral change.”
Importance of Early Detection
Dr. Kurien pointed out the significance of identifying early symptoms of ENT-related issues. She advised users to be mindful of using personal audio devices that fit well, warning that prolonged use can aggravate ear health. “No audio device should be used for extended periods. Regular cleaning and sanitizing of these devices are also crucial to prevent ear infections,” she cautioned.
Medications and Health Conditions Impacting Hearing
Aside from gadget usage, various medications and health conditions may contribute to hearing deterioration. Dr. Kurien mentioned that antibiotics, anti-malarial drugs, diuretics, and cancer treatments, along with conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity, can negatively impact hearing capabilities.
Risks of Improper Ear Cleaning
Sadhana Chandrababu, an advanced audiologist with the Powys Teaching Health Board in the UK, warned against using cotton buds for ear cleaning. “Using cotton buds can harm the delicate skin inside the ear canal, leading to infections, earaches, and even tinnitus. There’s also a risk of perforating the eardrum,” she explained.
Avoiding High Decibel Sounds
Dr. Vikram M., an ENT consultant at Naruvi Hospital, advised on minimizing exposure to high-decibel sounds. He remarked, “If you frequently hear ringing or humming in your ears after work, or if you find yourself shouting to be heard over noise at your workplace, it’s a warning sign. This noise exposure can lead to long-term hearing damage.”
Continued Efforts in Public Health Awareness
This webinar was the 13th in a series of 15 under the ‘Happy India Healthy India’ initiative, organized by Naruvi Hospitals in collaboration with The Hindu. The series aims to raise awareness about important health issues, including the effects of modern gadgets on ear health.

Understanding the Risks Related to Gadgets
In today’s digital age, the prevalence of gadgets like mobile phones, headphones, and high-volume speakers poses a significant risk to the hearing health of young individuals. Experts have increasingly highlighted how daily exposure to loud audio devices can lead to irreversible hearing loss.
The Neglected Public Health Challenge
Experts have categorized noise-induced hearing loss as a significant yet neglected public health issue. Advocating for behavioral changes regarding audio device usage is essential to mitigate this growing concern among the youth. The call for increased awareness has never been more critical.
Early Detection and Prevention Strategies
Identifying early symptoms of hearing issues is crucial. Individuals are encouraged to use well-fitting audio devices and to limit their usage. Ensuring that audio devices are regularly cleaned can also prevent ear infections and promote better ear health.
Beyond Gadgets: Other Contributing Factors
It’s not just gadget usage that can deteriorate hearing. Certain medications, like antibiotics and anti-malarial drugs, along with medical conditions such as hypertension and diabetes, can also contribute to hearing loss. Awareness of these external factors is essential for comprehensive ear health.
The Dangers of Improper Ear Cleaning
Utilizing cotton buds inappropriately can harm the delicate skin of the ear canal, leading to complications such as infections or even ruptured eardrums. Emphasizing proper ear hygiene is vital for maintaining hearing health.
Avoiding Harmful Noise Levels
Extended exposure to high-decibel sounds can lead to hearing loss. It’s important for individuals, especially in workplace environments, to recognize the effects of sustained loud sounds. Symptoms like persistent ringing or the need to shout to communicate are signs of harmful noise exposure.
Engagement and Awareness Initiatives
Webinars and public health initiatives play a vital role in educating the public on the importance of hearing health. Engaging with communities through informative sessions can foster a culture of awareness, thus promoting healthier practices regarding audio devices.
