Embracing a Nomadic Lifestyle
After 1,500 days of living unanchored—a journey of four years, one month, and eight days—the word I hear most is “brave.” At 61 years old and recently divorced, I relinquished my home and possessions, leaving behind family and friends to embark on a voyage around the world without a set return date.
Defying Expectations of Travel
When I share my story, the usual response is, “I could never do that.” It’s true that many people find the idea of living out of a suitcase, unsure of their next destination, daunting. But this spontaneous approach to travel is precisely what I’ve chosen and relished.
Following My Heart’s Lead
My primary travel philosophy is simple: go where I want, when I want (while respecting travel laws). By listening to my heart and soul, I’ve often found delightful surprises. For instance, I originally planned to spend three months in Portugal, but after two, a gentle nudge whispered, “Ireland.” This impulsiveness has consistently led to enriching experiences.
Connection Through Wanderlust
In my travels across Ireland—from Dublin to Clifden—I ventured solo, yet I remained curious about meeting someone special. Remarkably, two connections emerged: one at a B&B, where we shared stories, and another on a local bus tour in the Aran Islands. Such moments reaffirmed the truth that when you trust your heart, incredible paths unfold.
The Freedom of Letting Go
For many, this free-spirited lifestyle may seem intimidating. I completely understand; I once felt the same. As a dedicated stay-at-home mom, planning was a second nature. From daily family activities to professional organizing, spontaneity was only enjoyable if it was pre-arranged. Transitioning to a life dictated by intuition was a significant yet rewarding shift.
Overcoming Doubt and Fear
Exhausted from years of wishing for change, I found myself at a crossroads. Building the confidence to travel alone involved baby steps, including creating a portable business and testing my new lifestyle for several months each year. My very first solo trip to Italy marked a turning point, when I transformed from a wife and mother to a self-assured traveler.
Global Adventures and Personal Growth
In my travels to 21 countries and 196 destinations of varying durations, I’ve fulfilled a 35-year dream. The most frequently asked question during my journey is, “What’s your favorite place?” My response is always the same: “All of them.” Each destination is a reflection of my heart’s desires until it’s time to set off again.
Home is Where the Heart Is
Ultimately, my extended travels have taught me profound lessons about self-love and trust. Rather than succumbing to societal expectations, I’ve chosen to follow my joy and, in doing so, discovered that true home is wherever my heart feels at peace.

Embracing a Nomadic Lifestyle at 61
After years of planning and dreaming, I embarked on a journey that transformed my life. At 61, I left my home, family, and comfort behind to explore the world as a nomad. This choice has led me to places I never imagined, illustrating the beauty of living life on my terms.
The Catalyst for Change
For 1,500 days, I’ve traveled to 21 countries and called 196 different places home, ranging from bustling cities to serene villages. My journey proved that adventure knows no age and that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams. My story often sparks admiration, yet many people express doubt about their ability to make similar changes in their lives.
Trusting My Journey
Initially, the idea of living without a fixed plan was daunting. However, I learned to trust my instincts and follow wherever my heart led me. Often, I found myself in unexpected locations, experiencing moments of joy I could never have planned. For example, my decision to explore Ireland transitioned smoothly from my planned stay in Portugal, leading to serendipitous encounters and enriching experiences along the way.
Letting Go of Control
For the majority of my life, I relied on meticulous planning—be it for my family or my career as a professional organizer. Breaking free from that structure was liberating. It allowed me to embrace spontaneity and adapt in real-time, which has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my nomadic journey.
Personal Growth Through Travel
The journey has not just been physical; it has been emotional and psychological. Each destination has contributed to my self-discovery, teaching me to embrace solitude and build confidence in being alone. I went through a radical transformation, evolving from a stay-at-home mother to a woman who cherishes her independence and self-worth.
Finding Joy in Every Experience
As I navigated through various cultures and environments, I learned that every place has its own magic. The most common question I receive from fellow travelers is about my favorite location. My answer is simple: every place holds a piece of my heart. Each stop on my journey has brought me closer to understanding myself and what brings me joy.
Home is Where the Heart Is
Ultimately, my journey reinforces a profound truth: home is not merely a physical space, but wherever your heart feels connected. My adventures have taught me that by following my passions and listening to my heart, I have found a deeper sense of belonging and fulfillment.
As I continue this nomadic lifestyle, I invite others to consider stepping outside their comfort zones. You might just discover that the world is filled with opportunities waiting for you to embrace them.
